Written in 1810 but unpublished until 1867, the Bagatelle in A minor is far better known than its history suggests. Its opening theme is the easiest thing in it. The episodes between its returns are where the substance lies. The hardest is the F major one that breaks into rapid right-hand runs, which separates players who have learnt Für Elise from those who can play it. Because the refrain is so approachable, the piece is usually taken up too early and left unrefined, with uneven arpeggios and a restless tempo.

Treated as seriously as a sonata, it gives back what you put into it. An even arpeggio, a smooth hand-over between the hands, restraint with the pedal, and a long, wistful line that never sags are what it needs. Played softly, it stays beautiful at any stage. Anyone can get through it. The test is making the easy part sound as considered as the hard part.
